Health and Safety - Training
There are a number of health and safety seminars that are mandatory for faculty, staff and students which vary according to your role within the organization. Refer to the Training Requirements Matrix to determine which sessions you will need to attend. Please notify Erika Hill when training has been completed.
Mandatory Sessions for Everyone
WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)
Mandatory for all university employees. This includes faculty, staff, graduate students, work bursary students and volunteers that work more than 10 hours per week. Online training is available via WebCT OWL. Use your Western employee computer username and password to login. Recertification is required every three years.
Employee Health and Safety Orientation
Mandatory for all new faculty and staff (as well as graduate students who work in laboratories). If you have not completed this session, you are considered to be new to the university. Participants must register online using their Western ID# for this one hour seminar.
Additional Sessions (May not be required by all workers)
Faculty/Supervisors Responsibilities Seminar
Mandatory for any faculty member who is responsible for supervising staff, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, student assistants, work bursary students or other employed students. Also mandatory for any staff member who supervises other staff employed by Western (including work bursary students, other employed students or graduate students). Participants must register online using their Western ID# for this 2 hour and 30 minute seminar.
Laboratory and Environmental/Waste Management Safety Workshop
Mandatory for all laboratory supervisors and workers (anyone who conducts a procedure in a laboratory). Participants must register online using their Western ID# for this 2 hour and 30 minute seminar.
Biosafety
Mandatory for all new principle investigators, research staff and graduate students who work with microorganisms, cell cultures, human blood and bodily fluids. Participants must register online using their Western ID# for this 3 hour session.
Nuclear Radiation Safety
Mandatory for all radioisotope users. Participants must register online using their Western ID# for this 6 hour seminar (two 3 hour sessions). The refresher seminar is required every two years.
Nuclear Radiation Safety Refresher
Mandatory for all nuclear energy workers who have not received training in the last two years. Contact Hoa Ly and provide him with your UWO employee computer username and he will set the session up for you on WebCT.
Nuclear Radiation Safety Awareness
Mandatory for all personnel who intend to enter a nuclear radiation room and have not received radiation safety training. Participants can view the radiation safety awareness material online.
Position Hazard Communication Form
All employees must fill out a Position Hazard Communication Form with their supervisor. This form is the Department's communication to Occupational Health and Safety and the employee, of the known potential hazards in the workplace. The form must be completed: a) when a new employee is hired; b) when an employee is reclassified; c) when the hazards change; and d) when the position changes.
